CPM Advertising Tutorial

Making Money Online |

Many options exist today for advertising online. CPM, or cost per thousand impressions, is a very cost effective way to get your message or advertisement displayed, whether it is a product, service or just simple content.

Below are the basics steps of CPM advertising:

  1. Figure our your advertising budget.  For this example, let's use $30 per month
  2. Search through a search engine on a keyword that relates to your advertisement.  For example, if you want to find Easy Investing solutions, you can search on "Easy Investing".
  3. Record the sites that show up on the first and second page of the search results.  Then find a traffic analysis site that will help you identify the amount of page views per month those sites receive.  Let's say we found an interesting site we want to advertise on that receives around 6000 page views per month.
  4. Divide your monthly advertising budget by the page views per month.  In this case, $30 / 6000 = $0.005 per impression.  Multiply this by 1000 to get your CPM, so in this case the CPM is $5.00 per every thousand impressions.
    • CPM = Advertising Budget / Page Views * 1000

Now that you know how to calucate CPM based on your ideal advertising budget, search for sites with your ideal page views per month.  Also, ad campaigns like Google AdSense allow you to setup scenarios for specific CPM rates.

A cost effective alternative to CPM based advertising it to still use the search engine to find high ranking web sites for specific keywords that relate to your ad.  Then email the web site owners and request their advertising rates for basic text or visual ads on their main page.  Usually you will get basement bargain prices this way for advertising, yet still reap a good CPM due to the low cost, and high amount of traffic these sites attract.  Remember that the sites on the first two pages of search results are the pages that get 99% of the search engine traffic directed to them.  An example site that offers very competitive advertising rates is Easy Investing Strategies.

Making Money Online: The eHow Experience

Everyone dreams of making money, and potentially a living, from the comfort of their own home.  There are many online gimmicks and get rick quick schemes one can come across by simply searching google or yahoo for methods of making money online.  The method described below is not a get rich quick scheme or even a get rich over time concoction, but rather a simply method for making consistent and growing income each month through residual earnings from writing articles online. Below is a nine month experiment of writing eHow articles and tracking earnings based on the articles published.

I started writing ehow articles in January, and tracked all earnings as well as the number of articles published per month, and total articles published over time. The below table and chart show the earnings over time and earnings per article calculation on a monthly basis.
eHow Earnings Over Time
Notice that most of the articles were written in January, however over time the dollar amount earned per article increased as articles became more visible by search engines. Also note that in the July time period, six articles were removed. This is because eHow strives to keep their content to a high standard, and removes articles that are either poorly written, have low amount of visitors, or violate any of the eHow guidelines.

As you can see, writing articles on eHow can make you money over time, and the longer articles are out on the web, the greater the return you can expect.

Connecting windows machine to wireless Mac shared internet

The Apple Mac operating system provides an interesting feature that allows you to share your Mac internet connection via the AirPort.  For example, you can have your Mac Mini or other Mac computer hooked up to your DSL or Cable Modem via the cable connection, and then share that connection via the wireless AirPort as a wireless router.  Then any computer with a wireless connection can access the internet just as if you had a stand alone wireless router.  This saves the need to purchase a wireless router, or wireless access point and router combination.  There is one major hurdle however if you try to access the wireless network using a windows system.

The internet sharing feature of the Mac OS was very impressive, that is until you try to connect a Windows machine to the wireless shared internet connection.  If you do not enable WEP security on the Mac shared AirPort connection, then you are good to go.  Everything works perfectly to connect your Windows machine to the wireless network.  This is not ideal however, since anyone within the wireless network range can then use your network and steel bandwidth.  It is highly recommended that you enable the WEP security.  This is where the problem starts however.  Once WEP security is enabled and you enter your password, the Windows machine can no longer connect, even though you enter the same WEP password on the Windows machine.  The secret setting to getting this to work is that you have to enable the network authentication type as "shared."  Depending on your wireless network hardware, there will be various software configuration tools.  Browse through the settings and make sure the Network Authentication is set to "shared."  Once you enable this, and enter your WEP security password, the Windows system will connect and you will be good to go.

A great article with detailed instructions on how to configure your Mac internet share and enable your Windows PC to connect ca be found at "How to connect windows computer to Mac wireless internet share".

Hopefully this has saved you considerable time and frustration.

Why Macs are better than PC’s

I used to be a PC guy, always was.  That is until I got a Mac Mini a little over a year ago.  It's not so much the hardware or looks of the Mac machines I like, but it's instead the stability of the software/Operating System and ease of use.  The operating system itself won me over in a matter of days.  I enjoyed working on the Mac so much, I bought an Aluminum MacBook Pro 15.4" for software development and digital image work.

The Mac OS X operating system is so intuitive and straight forward that you waste no time searching around for what you want to do.  The doc and System preferences are right there for you, and they contain everything you need to navigate the OS.

Here are just a few simple facts which make working on Mac's so much more pleasurable than PC's.

  1. Neither my Mac Mini or MacBook Pro have ever crashed.  The Mac Mini is over a year old, the MacBook Pro is a few months old.  I do not shut them down at night, they are either in standby or sleep mode.
  2. Have not experienced any viruses or malware attacks.  I regularly had problems with this on Windows PC's, even after fresh OS installs.
  3. Everything is simplified in an intuitive file structure for you.  There is no need to move files around, change directories, etc.  Things end up where you think they should.  Edit or upload a photo, it automatically puts it under your user name and Pictures directory.  Likewise with a document.  Create or edit a document in any software application, and it saves it the natural location under your user name and documents directory.
  4. Updates are quick and painless.  They download automatically in the background, and the OS provides notifications that updates are ready.  You can choose to ignore and update later, or update immediately.  Most require a reboot of the machine, which again happens automatically if you do not do it within a specific amount of time.  I have never had an update go wrong.  Unfortunately I can not say that for my many Windows machines.
  5. The computer goes to sleep when you close the lid.  Try that with your windows machine.  Sure, it may go to sleep a few times, but then you will run into the issue where it won't wake up.  Then sometimes it will fail to go to sleep.  Not on the Mac, it will go to sleep every time you request it to,  either via closing the laptop or pressing the sleep button.
  6. If you really have to run windows applications, you can use virtual machine software, such as Parallels.  This software allows you to run the full OS inside a window in your Mac OS.  You will be able to run any native windows application on your Mac, and still be protected by the underlying Mac OS.

I could go on and on, but I thought I would highlight just a few of the items which make Macs so enjoyable to compute on.  Never again will I opt to purchase a PC.

Twitter or Facebook, which is better

Social Networking has become very popular over the past few years.  Sites like MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter are generating thousands of hits daily and attracting new users at a record pace.  The two most popular social networking sites are Facebook and Twitter.  So how do you decide which one to go for if you are just starting out?  Below are some strengths for each to help you decide.

Facebook is a more complex social networking site that allows you to share your current status, images, videos and interesting web links.  This portal is focused on sharing your life with friends and family via Facebook friends.  A person can not see your profile, pictures or status unless they request to be your friend and you accept their request.  You can alter your Facebook settings and allow anyone to see your information, or you can hide your status and information from anyone.  The site has a longer learning curve for those new to social networking sites, but it is very feature rich and a great way to share details of your life with your family and friends.

Twitter on the other hand is all about your status, and what you are currently doing.  You have a main page where you can type your status, and anyone that is currently following you will get real time status updates.  You search and find other Tweets to follow.  Likewise, others can add you to their list so they can follow any updates you post.  Twitter is a very simplistic site, and it does what it's supposed to do well.  If you are looking to communicate your status quickly and often, and follow other peoples status regularly, then Twitter is the site for you.

If you are still having a hard time deciding, you could sign up for both Facebook and Twitter, and then install the Twitter Facebook application on your Facebook site.  This syncs up your Twitter status and automatically updates your Facebook status with the same message.  This way you can get the best of both sites.  If you want to provide quick updates, log into Twitter and update your status.  If you want to share links, photos, videos or other things with friends, you can utilize your Facebook site.

Hopefully this gives you some insight into the strengths of Facebook and Twitter, and allows you to make an informed decision on which one is best for your situation.

Apple iWeb vs Adobe Dreamweaver, depends on your skill level

Janzos Services, Technology Discussion |

Apple iWeb is a great software solution for the beginner or amateur web site developer who wants to put  up a web site quickly.  Unfortunately it has some limitations on customization, and cross browser presentation.  On the other hand, Adobe Dreamweaver provides all the advanced features and flexibility to develop any type of web site possible, but it comes with a steep learning curve for the average user.  Both software solutions are suitable for web developers depending on the type of content and purpose of the web site being developed.

Apple's iWeb is excellent for quick digital photo sites, blogs, informational sharing, or personal pages.  It allows you to get your web site up and running quickly with full preview support in your default browser, and options to allow you to publish directly to your server of choice.  There is a plethora of options available that allow you to customize the look and feel of your site.  This includes fonts, colors, opacity and object variations that enables a "design by look" approach rather than the typical "code and preview" approach other software solutions provide.

After your site is designed in iWeb, you start to see the limitations.  It is very unintuitive to include customized features such as Javascript, AJAX code, mySQL directives, or any type of dynamic HTML.  Also, you will need to check your web site with several different browsers and versions.  Firefox and Safari are the best for viewing iWeb pages, internet explorer does not always render pages correctly, especially if you use opacity options on your background colors.  Due to these low lights, iWeb is not an ideal solution for the advanced user, or for someone who requires a site with both a sleek look and feel, as well as providing instant user feedback through dynamic controls.  This is where a software package such as Adobe Dreamweaver comes in.

Adobe's Dreamweaver software is by far the most advanced solutions for designing web sites that can handle content ranging from personal web sites and blogs to the development of Fortune 500 companies web site portals.  This makes Dreamweaver a clear choice for the above average or power user.  Live preview features work for javascript, AJAX, PHP, and even database functions.  There are many options and features available to help design a web site, but it does require basic knowledge of HTML, and and understanding of web concepts such as headers, tags, etc.  This makes the learning curve for entry level web programmers very steep and intimidating.  Once past the learning curve, the amount of features and flexibility will win you over.

In the end, both solutions are suitable for web site design.  The choice will depend on your skill level and targeted web site audience.  If you are looking for a large amount of flexibility and support for the latest dynamic HTML and AJAX content, then Dreamweaver is the clear choice.  If your desire is to quickly design and launch a basic website, iWeb clearly wins in this category.

If you prefer to let profesionals help you design your web site, please check our sevices as Janzos Solutions Services page.  We offer affordable web site design, hosting and custom software development.
